Colic Treatment
Babies cry in general to communicate. Too communicate hunger, discomfort, pain and tension. So what is Colic and why all the Fuss?
Colic is described as relentless infant crying, that is concentrated at the end of the day. Mothers often describe a colic infant as inconsolable. Colic is significant because it often leads to early discontinuation of breast feeding, formula changes and early use of solid food. In addition it disturbs the infant/maternal bond and increases the risk for abuse. Without any type of treatment only 25% of colic infants with stop crying at 3 months.
So why do Chiropractors provide Colic treatment? Because maybe Colic is to infants as back pain is to adults. Colic is a poorly understood condition, but one thing is for sure, if you take a colic infant to a chiropractor, the treatment will result in decreased crying for the baby (Miller, et al. 2011).
How do Chiropractors treat? To provide colic treatment on the first visit chiropractors will first take a health history and do a physical exam on the infant. The health history is done to get a bit more information about your baby and to make sure nothing more serious is going on. During the physical exam the chiropractor will look at some of your babies reflexes and make sure they are developing normally. They will then feel all the joints in their back and neck to see if any are irritated and not moving properly. If your baby has some irritated joints in there spine the chiropractor will gently adjust those joints to make sure they are sitting in the proper position. Adjustments are very gentle and are very low force, only enough force to blanch a finger nail is used.
How many treatments are needed? You should notice a considerable decrease in the number of hours your baby cry’s a day with 3 treatments. If there is no change after the first 3 treatments your chiropractor may suggest you see another health care professional.
