Physical, Emotional and Chemical Stressors

Stress in the body has 3 main sources – Physical,  emotional, and chemical.  These stresses break down the normal function of our bodies, making us weaker physically and emotionally over time.

When we are weak, we are more susceptible to pain and disease.

Physical traumas

Physical stress like accidents, strains, sprains are usually easy to understand as a source of stress and injury to the body.  However, one of the biggest physical stresses almost everyone is subjected to is sitting for long periods of time.

Whether it is sitting in an office chair, driving to work, sitting at the end of the day on the couch or at our personal computers, we all do some combination of this for hours every day.

This slowly, and silently destroys the curves of your spine, your discs, your back muscles, and posture.  The overall effect of these changes is to cause negative adaptations in the way your nervous system works.

There are many other examples of physical stresses you may have been subjected to such as lifting heavy objects, repetitively carrying a child on one side or sleeping on your stomach.

Emotional

Emotional stress can be occur when you are “busy” or “stressed”. Think about it when your stressed you often hold your shoulders up high and are generally tense throughout your whole body. Stress from work, unhealthy relationships can have a lot of effects on our body, spine and nervous system.

Chemical

Chemical stresses come from both our internal and external environment.  The balance of our diet, smoking, excessive or unnecessary medications all can move our body away from balance and decrease the strength of our body tissues.

Our external chemical stressors can include diet, pollution and exposure to harsh chemicals.

These all serve to disrupt hormone regulation in the body and effect the way our body build tissues such as muscles, nerves and bone affecting the ability of the body to function.
