Chiropractic and Ear Infections: A Gentle, Supportive Option for Keswick Families

Few things are harder for a parent than watching a child in pain from a recurring ear infection — the sleepless nights, the tugging at the ear, and the repeated trips to the doctor and rounds of antibiotics. If your family has been through this cycle, you may be looking for gentle, drug-free ways to support your child’s overall health between episodes. Many Keswick parents ask us the same question: can a chiropractor help with ear infections?

The honest answer is nuanced, and we believe you deserve a clear, evidence-based explanation rather than a sales pitch. Below, we’ll explain what ear infections are, what chiropractic care can and cannot do, and when it’s essential to see your physician.

What Causes Ear Infections?

An ear infection (otitis media) happens when fluid builds up behind the eardrum in the middle ear and becomes infected by a virus or bacteria. Normally, that fluid drains through a small passage called the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat.

In young children, the Eustachian tube is shorter, narrower, and more horizontal than in adults, so fluid drains less easily and can become trapped. Add a cold, allergies, or a respiratory infection, and the tube can swell and block drainage altogether. This is why ear infections are so common in childhood — and why some children experience them again and again.

Can a Chiropractor Help With Ear Infections?

Let’s be direct: chiropractors do not treat or cure the infection itself. An active ear infection is a medical condition, and it may require diagnosis and treatment from a physician.

What chiropractic care does focus on is the musculoskeletal system — the spine, joints, and surrounding muscles — and how well the body moves and functions. Some families choose to add gentle chiropractic care as a complementary, supportive approach, particularly for children with recurring ear troubles. The idea is that gentle work around the upper neck and surrounding soft tissue may help support natural drainage and ease muscular tension.

It’s important to set expectations honestly: the research on chiropractic care and ear infections is limited, and the existing studies are small. Chiropractic care should never replace medical care or delay a needed visit to your doctor. Think of it as one part of a whole-family wellness routine — not a treatment for infection.

What Chiropractic Care Can and Can't Do

  • It can: support overall musculoskeletal function, comfort, and general wellness, and offer a gentle, drug-free option that many families value between episodes.
  • It can’t: diagnose, treat, or cure an infection, replace antibiotics when they are medically necessary, or guarantee that ear infections won’t return.

Our Gentle Approach at Georgina Chiropractic

At Georgina Chiropractic in Keswick, Dr. Jen Dickieson takes a careful, family-centred approach. For children, that means:

  • A thorough history and a gentle assessment appropriate to your child’s age.
  • Light, low-force techniques — paediatric chiropractic uses only a fraction of the pressure used for adults, often no more than a gentle fingertip touch.
  • Soft-tissue and craniosacral-style techniques intended to support relaxation and comfort.
  • Clear communication about what to expect, and honest guidance about when your child should see a physician.

Our goal is never to replace your family doctor — it’s to support your child’s overall wellbeing as part of a broader plan.

What About Ear Infections in Adults?

Ear infections aren’t only a childhood problem. Adults can develop them too, often after a cold, sinus congestion, allergies, or exposure to smoke. Because jaw and upper-neck tension can contribute to ear discomfort and a “blocked” feeling, some adults find that addressing musculoskeletal tension — including issues related to the jaw (TMJ) and cervical spine — helps them feel more comfortable overall. As with children, this is supportive care, not a substitute for medical evaluation of an infection.

When You Should See a Doctor

Please seek medical care promptly — before considering complementary options — if you or your child experience any of the following:

  • A baby under 6 months of age with any ear symptoms or fever.
  • High fever, severe pain, or symptoms that last more than 2–3 days.
  • Fluid, pus, or blood draining from the ear.
  • Swelling, redness, or pain behind the ear.
  • Changes in hearing or balance, or persistent dizziness.

These can signal an infection that needs medical treatment. Chiropractic care is a complement to — never a replacement for — appropriate medical attention.

A Whole-Family Approach to Wellness in Keswick

Recurring ear infections are exhausting for the whole family. While your physician manages the infection itself, gentle chiropractic care can be one supportive piece of your family’s wellness routine. Many local families first come to us for chiropractic care or pregnancy and child care, and appreciate having a trusted, drug-free option close to home.

If you’d like to talk through whether gentle chiropractic care is a good fit for your family, we’re happy to answer your questions honestly — with no pressure.

Chiropractic and Infectious disease

The standard medical treatment for ear infections (otitis media)  is with antibiotics. But, according to many research studies, antibiotics are often not much more effective than the body’s own immune system.

Published research is now showing that, after receiving a series of chiropractic adjustments, nearly 80 percent of the children treated were free of ear infections for at least the six-month period following their initial visits (a period that also included maintenance treatments every four to six weeks).

Chiropractic adjustments improve drainage of the ear in children, and if they can continue to drain without a buildup of fluid and subsequent infection, children will build up their own antibodies and recover more quickly.

Adjusting the base of the skull and the upper neck, in particular, will get the middle ear to drain. This is because adjusting the spine,  particularly the neck, will remove any interference from the nervous system and will allow the Eustachian tubes to function properly.  If a child’s case is acute, they will generally get an adjustment every day or every other day and then adjustments will decrease in frequency over time. Since they are susceptible to ear infections and in order to improve the function of their nervous system and body a maintaince program of adjustments once every 4-6 weeks will be recommended.

Chiropractic care is safe and effective and is something that parents should try, certainly before surgically inserting tubes in their children’s ears.

Talk to your doctor of chiropractic about your child’s ear infections. Doctors of chiropractic are licensed and trained to diagnose and treat patients of all ages and will use a gentler type of treatment for children.

Frequently asked questions

Chiropractors do not treat or cure ear infections, which are a medical condition. Some families choose gentle chiropractic care as a complementary, drug-free approach focused on musculoskeletal function and comfort, especially for recurring issues. It should always be used alongside — not instead of — medical care.

Paediatric chiropractic uses extremely light, gentle techniques — far less pressure than adult care. At Georgina Chiropractic we assess each child individually and always encourage parents to see a physician for diagnosis and treatment of an active infection.

Adults can experience ear discomfort linked to jaw (TMJ) and upper-neck tension. Addressing that musculoskeletal tension may help some adults feel more comfortable, but it is supportive care only and not a treatment for the infection itself.

Yes. Always have an ear infection diagnosed and, if needed, treated by a physician — especially for infants, high fever, severe pain, drainage, or symptoms lasting more than a couple of days.

After a gentle, age-appropriate assessment, the chiropractor uses very light techniques intended to support drainage and ease tension. The focus is on overall comfort and wellness as part of a whole-family approach.
