Coccydynia (Tailbone Pain)
The medical term for “tailbone pain” is Coccydynia.
Coccydynia is a fairly rare condition that can cause persistent pain at the very bottom of the spine. This type of pain is generally described as a bruised feeling or a sensitivity over the tailbone area. It is generally aggravated when pressure is applied to the tailbone like when sitting on a hard chair. Symptoms are usually relieved with standing or walking around when pressure is removed from the tailbone or Coccyx.
Most often, the cause of coccydynia is unknown. Other causes include trauma (for example, from falls and childbirth); abnormal, excessive mobility of the tailbone; and – very rarely – infection, tumor, or fracture.
Chiropractic treatment can be very effective and generally consists of adjustments or mobilizations to the coccyx & spine, soft tissue therapy to the surrounding muscles and ligaments as well as lifestyle modifications.
