Here is what Harvard Health says about Chiropractic…
Chiropractic is a health care system that values the structure of the body, particularly the spine, and how it affects the function of every part of the body. Chiropractors try to correct the body’s alignment to relieve pain, improve function and to help the body heal itself.
Chiropractic research has become very strong with regards to spinal adjustments for back pain and other problems such as headaches, neck pain, and whiplash. Research is continually getting stronger with regards the effect of chiropractic adjustments and the improvement of overall health & wellbeing.
There have been minimal reports of serious complications, including stroke, following spinal manipulation of the neck. Complications are very rare and most studies suggest that chiropractic adjustments do not directly cause stroke.
“Spinal manipulation or spinal adjustments” is a generic term used for any kind of therapeutic movement of the spine, but used more precisely it is the application of quick but strong pressure on a joint between two vertebrae of the spine. That pressure moves the joint beyond its normal range of motion and causes a popping or “cracking” noise. That distinctive noise is caused by the the release of a gas bubble in the synovial fluid, the clear, thick fluid that lubricates the spinal and other joints. Most spinal adjustments take somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes and are scheduled two or three times a week initially.
In addition, a chiropractor may advise you about changing your biomechanics and posture and suggest other treatments and techniques. The ultimate goal of chiropractic is to help patients improve the function of the spine & in doing so improve the function of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord & peripheral nerves) improving health & wellbeing.
